Notes on CS239 Final Exam

The final exam for CS239, Section 3 (Advanced Operating Systems) will consist of three parts, worth a total of 100 points. It is closed book, closed notes. The final will be held in Math-Science 5203, Tuesday, June 13 8-11 AM.

I won't be able to be there personally, but I'll have Janice Martin show up to handle giving out and picking up the tests. Ms. Martin is not an expert on operating systems, so she will not be able to answer many questions or clear up confusions. I hope the test is self-explanatory. Sorry I can't be there for it, in case it isn't. If you have confusion about any part of it, make a note on your paper about the nature of the confusion and do the best you can. I will take into account any reasonable difficulties of this kind while grading the tests.

The first part of the test contains 12 short answer questions. These largely test your knowledge of important terms. Each question is worth one point.

The second part contains 13 multiple choice questions that test both your understanding of key concepts and familiarity with important terms. Each question is worth one point. Generally, both these and the short answer questions are straightforward, without intentional tricks.

The third part contains 6 essay questions. You are to choose and answer any three of them, for 25 points apiece. These questions are meant to test more in-depth understanding of some issues discussed in the course.

The test covers all the material presented in all class lectures, plus all the material contained in papers assigned for the class. It may cover material that was lectured on, but does not appear in the notes or papers, so I hope you attended all the lectures. I have tried to avoid asking questions about what I regard as trivial matters, and I have tried to avoid asking questions that could not reasonably be answered without consulting notes.

The coverage of the final is more or less equally spread over the time and material of the entire class. So don't skip studying the stuff that was covered on the midterm - some of it is on the test, too.

Good luck on the final, and I hope you all do very well.
