It's time for my seventh annual summer blockbuster movie contest. Here's how it works. Below I provide the titles of six upcoming movies that will open in North America during the summer. You send me a message guessing how much money you think they'll make in North America during the summer. In addition, as a bonus question, choose the summer film not on the list I provide that will make the most money in North America during the period. The only prize is public recognition and the awe-filled admiration of the readers of the Usenet movie newsgroups.
Enter through this web page. Posted entries will be ignored, and, if past history is any indicator, heavily flamed by the net.police. If you have trouble with the web page, I will accept entries through email, provided it isn't too hard to decipher them. Only entries received before May 19th will be included. (Three guesses why that's the magic date.)
Enter your name (or whatever alias you prefer to go by) and an email address in the first two slots. Then, for each film enter the dollar amount (in millions) you think that film will make by the end of the summer. For example, if you think The Phantom Menace will make $2,125,000, enter the value 2. (Let me add the little hint that I think this would be a very bad guess.) I won't disqualify entries for not including email addresses, but if I have a problem with your entry and for whatever reason can't get back to you by email, I'll discard the entry.
Read the complete contest rules for further details, such as scoring, exact dates covered, etc.
This being the seventh annual contest implies there have been six earlier ones. The results of those may not offer much guidance, but they're available to check out.
A brief note - one of the chosen films is "Eyes Wide Shut." While it has an opening date of July 16th, very little official publicity has come out on the film, and it is not much mentioned on Warner Bros web site. Perhaps, as a last tribute to Stanley Kubrick, they plan on one final delay of the release of a Kubrick film. If, for any reason, "Eyes Wide Shut" does get delayed in release, it still counts for the contest, provided the delay is officially announced after May 19, when the contest starts. If it's announced as delayed between now and then, get back to me on what I'll do about it. If it is delayed, of course, 0 is a mighty fine guess for its gross.
