Design and Mitigation of Vehicular Botnets in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

I received my M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California Los Angeles in 2016 and 2019. I was a member of the Laboratory for Advanced Systems Research, working under the supervision of Prof. Peter Reiher. Prior to attending UCLA, I received my B.S. in Computer Science from Bilkent University in 2012.

My research interest is computer and network security. My dissertation research was focused on Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) security, particularly the design and mitigation of vehicular botnets. My dissertation was the pioneering work on vehicular botnets—presenting the secret vehicular botnet communication via which they can be organized and controlled, the powerful attacks that they can enable, and the defense mechanism against them. In recognition of my research contributions, I got awarded the 2015 Symantec Research Labs Graduate Fellowship.

Earlier in my program, my research was on the security of wireless medical devices, which was supported by the National Science Foundation. I investigated the man-in-the-middle attack vulnerabilities of these devices, and developed several mitigation strategies. Later, I conducted research on Internet architecture security, particularly Named Data Networking (NDN) security. During my undergrad, I did research on prevention mechanisms against buffer overflow, cross-site scripting and SQL injection attacks, under the supervision of Prof. Matt Bishop at the University of California Davis.
